Even from a very young age, Dr. Alicea knew he wanted to become a doctor—a surgeon specifically. At age 11, his twin brother had a bicycle accident that required oral surgery. Dr. Alicea was so fascinated by the surgeon’s skills and the wonderful results he achieved for his brother, inspiration struck. He knew that oral surgery would be his path. He attended dental school, where the faculty supported his fast-track into oral surgery. As it turned out, he became skilled in many specialties, including prosthodontics. As an oral surgeon today, Dr. Alicea combines other specialty skills to assist patients and fellow doctors in a variety of circumstances.
Practicing medicine might be in Dr. Alicea’s genes. His twin brother became a prosthodontist in restorative dentistry and practices in Tampa, FL. Combining medicine with project management and the artistry of working with their hands may have come from their parents. Their mother is a pharmacist and their father is a mechanical engineer.
“I am most gratified when I am able to help a patient make a significant improvement in their quality of life. Moving a patient’s jaw into the right position or relieving pain with TMJ surgery are just two examples of making a big difference in someone’s life.”
Patients are sometimes surprised to learn the lengths to which Dr. Alicea will go to help when they are in pain. Whether it is opening the office on a weekend, or taking them to the ER, he is always willing to go the extra mile. Dr. Alicea is on call with Central Florida’s only Level One trauma center at Orlando Regional Medical Center. He also donates some of his time to the Orange County Research Clinic and Dental Outreach. Dr. Alicea enjoys the challenge of taking on the more difficult cases.
